  • 6m x 2m Avo Tree Spacing ✅

  • Employing Specialists 👩‍🌾

In our most recent JAFF story [JAFF 34], we met an industry giant from the heart of South Africa’s most productive avo region. Whilst the fact that he’s a giant makes some of his practices difficult for the average sized farmer to employ, there were certainly a few pearls that could be worn in anyone’s string.

Here Are 3 Top Takeaways From JAFF 34:

1. Drape Netting: A Shield Against the Wind

Traditionally, drape netting in orchards primarily serves to protect the trees—or more accurately, the fruit—from sunburn. However, JAFF is pioneering a novel application: combatting wind damage. And he reports: “It’s working.”

Curious to see how it's done? Have a look here 👉 [link] and get a closer look at the netting and the mechanics of installing it. (Just scroll halfway down the story.)

2. Dense Spacing: Maximising Potential

Intrigued by the idea of 833 trees per hectare with a 6m x 2m spacing? That's over two and a half times as dense than the standard 8m x 4m spacing seen in most orchards.

What drives a corporate giant with so much land to adopt such dense planting, and how is it managed so effectively? Learn how they do it all in the story 👉 [link]

3. Employing Specialists: Leveraging External Expertise

Because ‘n Boer Maak Altyd ‘n Plan (a farmer always makes a plan) he sometimes forgets that there is a world of skills out there.

We’ve all been there, trying to juggle it all ourselves. This might strike a chord with the majority of (especially smaller) farmers who tend to do the same thing. But should we learn to ask for help when we’re out of our depth? Often, it doesn’t cost as much as we think it might…

On the other extreme, would not being able to make your own decisions on matters such as which fertiliser to apply or how your trees are pruned freak you out, or would it be a relief? And the idea of owning versus dialing-a-tractor for occasional use—how does that sit with you?

There’s a lesson or two to be learnt in this part 👉 [link]

Each takeaway from JAFF 34 highlights a broader narrative of innovation, resilience, and the importance of community in agriculture. Regardless of your operation's size, there's wisdom in JAFF 34 that can apply to all.

We’d love to hear your thoughts and ignite a conversation about your take on JAFF 34’s farming approaches. (let us know and leave a comment 😉)

Hope you find these insights as fascinating as we did! 🤓

That’s a wrap folks!
